YIBIN LI


YIBIN LI was born in China in a small city near the Gobi Desert and began studying the violin at age five with her father. She was admitted to the prestigious Shanghai Conservatory at age 12 where upon graduation she was named to the Violin Faculty. After teaching at the Shanghai Conservatory for six years as a tenured violin professor, she felt the need to continue her studies in New York. She was admitted to The Juilliard School and gained her graduate diploma. Ms. Li earned a second Masters of Music degree from Mannes School of Music. Her teachers included Lewis Kaplan, Seymour Lipkin, Earl Carlyss, Peiwen Yuan and Xiaolong Liu.

Ms. Li has performed as a soloist with major symphonies in China including the Beijing National Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra and Gaoxiong Symphony Orchestra. In the US, Ms. Li gave her New York debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 2001, and has had solo performances with the San Diego Symphony, Hunter Symphony and Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. She is currently the first violinist and founder of the Iris String Quartet, and has directed and played chamber music and solo recitals in many New York City venues including Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, and Carnegie Hall. In 2015 and 2016, she traveled to over 20 cities in China performing both solo and chamber concerts in major performing arts centers.

Ms. Li taught at the Bowdoin International Music Festival from 2012- 2015 and joined the faculty of the Portland Bach Festival in 2016. She is a visiting professor at the Xi’an Conservatory of Music and Beijing Central University for Normal Studies in China, the Mannes School of Music and The Juilliard Pre-college as assistant violin faculty.

Ms. Li has won various prizes including the Artist International Competition in New York, the Shanghai Chamber Music Competition, and the International Young Violinist Competition in China. Ms. Li has recorded CDs for the China Record Company as well as the premier of the “Hong Hu” Violin Concerto by Zhanhao He.
